Erich von Stroheim Movies (and commercial DVDs)

As Director

- Blind Husbands (1919)

Kino (Very good, even without the excellent commentary of the other two Kino Von Stroheim Collection DVDs.)

Edition Filmmuseum  (excellent print, very good music).

- Devil's Passkey (1920) (lost movie)

-Foolish Wives (1922)

Kino (Runs at the right pace; movie needs to be seen with the good commentary to fill in the many plot holes from censor's cuts. The music is allegedly authentic, but at times unpleasant)

Alpha Video (Get the Kino version instead.  Music is better than the Kino edition but has nothing to do with what's on-screen, and the transfer speed is a silent run at sound speed, although if you are a fan of the movie, and watching om your laptop, setting at 75% speed and turning off the sound makes this nicely watchable).

Image Entertainment (not as good of a production as the Kino version, but the music is better)

Young Indiana Jones Ch. 22- "Hollywood Follies" has a mock "making of" Foolish Wives story.

- Merry-Go-Round (1923) (knowing Von Stroheim's originally intended plot from the literature makes it more enjoyable, since replacement director Rupert Julian sentimentalized in some cases, and mechanically followed Stroheim's shooting script in others.  Stroheim comes across in several scenes, especially the debauched dinner party.)

    Image Entertainment (not bad)

Kino (has only the scenes Stroheim directed on the Queen Kelly DVD, so you can't see the movie on this DVD beyond just those scenes)

- Souls for Sale (1923)

Warner Archive- nice copy of an original that has obviously required restoration, although scene of Greed in the making is very brief.

- Greed (1924) (not yet on commercial DVD; on VHS

- The Merry Widow (1925) (not yet on commercial DVD)

- Wedding March (1928) (not yet on commercial DVD; on VHS)

- Queen Kelly (1929)

Kino version is just a fabulous DVD

- Walking Down Broadway (1932) (effectively lost; edited and reshot into Hello Sister!)

    Silver Screen Archive
